Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy (CryoPen®)
Cryotherapy is a precise, minimally invasive treatment used to remove benign superficial skin lesions using extreme cold. This treatment is available with our Skin therapist Claire.
At The Good Skin Guru, we use CryoPen®, a medical-grade device that delivers a controlled jet of nitrous oxide (N₂O) to freeze and safely destroy unwanted tissue. The extreme cold causes rapid cell destruction within the lesion while minimising trauma to the surrounding healthy skin.
What Can Be Treated?
Cryotherapy may be suitable for a range of common benign lesions, including:
Skin tags
Warts
Verrucae
Milia
Cherry angiomas
Seborrhoeic keratoses
Certain superficial pigmentation
Benign moles
All lesions must be assessed in person to confirm they are appropriate for treatment.
Why CryoPen®?
The CryoPen® applicator allows millimetre precision, delivering a focused jet of cryogen directly to the lesion. This helps:
Protect surrounding healthy tissue
Improve treatment accuracy
Reduce unnecessary skin trauma
Keep procedures quick and controlled
Most appointments are brief and well tolerated, with minimal disruption to daily activities.
What to Expect
Treatment time depends on the size, type and depth of the lesion. Some small lesions may resolve after a single treatment, while others may require a course for optimal results.
Following treatment, the lesion typically darkens, dries and sheds naturally as part of the healing process. Healing time varies depending on the area treated and may take up to 1–6 weeks.
Clinical Assessment & Safety
All lesions must be confirmed as benign before treatment.
If there is any clinical uncertainty, we will not proceed with cryotherapy until further assessment has been completed.
Map My Mole Screening
Where appropriate, we offer Map My Mole screening within clinic. This involves capturing a dermatoscopic image of the lesion and submitting it securely to a consultant dermatologist for review. A written report is typically returned within 48 hours.
This provides a faster alternative to GP referral for reassurance and clinical clarity.
Alternatively, you may choose to consult your GP directly.
Medical Referral Within Clinic
In some cases, following consultation, you may be referred for medical cryotherapy with Cheryl, our Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Independent Prescriber, where a higher level of clinical assessment or medical oversight is required.
If a lesion appears suspicious or has not been recently identified as benign by your doctor, you will be referred appropriately. We do not treat lesions where there is any suspicion of malignancy.
Your safety always comes first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I just book treatment without a consultation?
Every lesion must be clinically assessed in person before treatment. The size, depth, type and location as well as your medical history all influence whether you are suitable for cryotherapy and to determine how your lesion should be treated.
For safety reasons, we cannot provide treatment without a prior assessment.
Why can’t you give me a price over the phone or online?
The cost varies significantly depending on:
How many lesions are present
The size and depth of each lesion
The complexity of treatment
Without physically examining the lesion, it is not possible to give an accurate or responsible quote. Pricing is confirmed during consultation.
Can I be treated on the same day as my consultation?
If the lesion is clearly benign and clinically appropriate, we may be able to treat on the same day.
However, this cannot be guaranteed. Patient safety and correct treatment always take priority over convenience.
Why won’t you treat it if it looks harmless?
Some skin cancers and pre-cancerous lesions can appear similar to benign lesions. If there is any clinical uncertainty, we will not proceed with treatment until the lesion has been properly assessed.
This is not optional — it is part of safe medical practice.
What happens if you’re unsure about my lesion?
If needed, we offer Map My Mole screening within clinic. A dermatoscopic image is securely sent to a consultant dermatologist, with a written report typically returned within 48 hours.
Alternatively, you can arrange to see your GP.
Why might I be referred to Cheryl instead?
Occasionally, lesions require assessment or management at a medical level. In these cases, you may be referred to Cheryl, our Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Independent Prescriber, for medical cryotherapy or further evaluation.
